Confirmation Class at the
United Congregational Church of Tolland is intended to be a real “rite of
passage” for our young people of 8th grade age, or high school age. The parents are involved from the outset of the program in September,
encouraged to both support their son’s or daughter’s participation in
confirmation and to prepare for a significant family celebration on
Confirmation Sunday in June. A parent or two are also invited to serve
as Parent Assistants, helping the pastors at various times during the year.
The program begins with an
Orientation Meeting of parents and confirmands during which the expectations,
responsibilities, and class schedules are shared. For several years,
classes have been held on Tuesday afternoons and evenings, guided by the UCC
curriculum, “My Confirmation.” This resource begins (and concludes)
with a focus on just what confirmation means and entails. In between,
the chapters explore basic Biblical and theological understandings, an
overview of the history of Christianity, leading to a fuller examination of
our UCC and its work in mission and social justice. Study is also
devoted to our own Tolland congregation’s history, worship life, missions,
and, upon their completion of confirmation, their becoming full members
themselves. Another highlight of the year of study is the annual
Confirmation Retreat, an overnight experience of intensive sharing and
faith-building activities. Last, but certainly not least, the year is a
time for building relationships with their pastors, as well as with one
another.
During the program, the
students are assigned Sundays for serving as acolytes during worship, in
communion services, and times to help with the free meals program at
Cornerstone in
Rockville
. Also, in February, each confirmand is partnered with a deacon of the
Church for becoming acquainted over the next few months, providing them with
the opportunity to broaden their circle of adults in the Church.
As can be seen by the
foregoing, confirmation is a significant and growthful, even challenging,
experience here at UCC Tolland and one we wish (and pray) will be
transformative for each of our young people, firmly establishing their
Christian beliefs and identities.
Classes are offered on
Tuesdays
at 2:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. and meet weekly through May, with
the group being confirmed during the month of May.
